Notes: A-Rod gets a break as DH
Torre may give Jeter a day off from the field on Monday
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com
BOSTON -- With the Yankees in the midst of a 10-day, 11-game road trip, Joe
Torre decided to use Alex Rodriguez as his designated hitter on Sunday,
inserting Nick Green as the third baseman.
For A-Rod, it marks the third time this season he has DHed, and just the
fifth time this year that the Yankees have not started him at third base.
"It's half a day off," Rodriguez said. "It definitely helps to get off your
legs for a day."
Although it was not given as a reason for the move by Torre or Rodriguez, the
third baseman has made seven errors during Mike Mussina's starts this season,
including some costly miscues over the past month. Rodriguez, whose 22 errors
are tied for the most in the Majors, said he has felt "much better" at third
base recently.
The Yankees, who are also in the middle of a 20-day stretch with 21 games,
may use Derek Jeter as the DH on Monday in the finale against the Red Sox. If
Torre goes that route, Jason Giambi would get the entire day off against
southpaw David Wells.
"It's been hard, but everyone is out there doing it," Rodriguez said of the
grueling schedule. "You mentally have to get through it."
"We'll try to spread it around, do what's needed," Torre said. "It's been a
tough little run."
On the mend: Kyle Farnsworth tested his bruised right leg before Sunday's
game, throwing off a mound and jogging. Farnsworth reported no problems to
Torre, and he may be ready to pitch by Monday or Tuesday.
"I've been going day by day, but it's felt pretty good so far," Farnsworth
said. "It's not too bad; it's just all bruised. It didn't swell too bad,
which is good."
Farnsworth was injured on Friday night, taking a Wily Mo Pena line drive off
his calf. He left the game immediately, limping off the field.
"At the time it happened, how badly he was limping and where it was, it
looked dangerous," Torre said. "We're pleased."
Lidle returns: Cory Lidle rejoined the Yankees after spending the past four
days in Southern California following the death of his 97-year-old
grandmother.
"It feels weird when you're away from your team," Lidle said, "but when
someone passes away in your family, that's what you have to do."
Lidle, who will start on Monday, threw a bullpen session at home with his
brother catching. Lidle is 1-0 with a 5.11 ERA in six career outings (four
starts) at Fenway Park, but this will mark his first foray into the
Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.
"I don't suppose I'll know exactly what my feelings are going to be, but I
learned a while back that you can't get caught up in any different kind of
emotion than if it was any other game," Lidle said. "Most of my preparation
will be telling myself that it's just another game."
To make room for Lidle, who was on the bereavement list, the Yankees optioned
T.J. Beam back to Triple-A Columbus.
Plus for Pavano: Carl Pavano made his third rehab start on Sunday, his first
for Double-A Trenton.
Pavano threw four innings, giving up one run on three hits. He struck out
five and did not walk a batter, though he did hit one of the 18 men he faced.
The right-hander threw 78 pitches, and he will bump that count up to about 90
when he takes the mound for Columbus on Friday. Torre said that Pavano will
have to get himself to about 100 pitches and repeat it once or twice before
joining New York.
"He hasn't repeated in a year, so you have to make sure you send him out
there and he has to be comfortable with how he feels," Torre said. "This is
as close as we've gotten without giving an extra day here or there, and
physically, he's been fine."
The Yankees have a doubleheader with the Red Sox on Sept. 16, and Torre
believes that Pavano could be ready to make one of those starts if he
continues on his current pace.
"It's certainly possible, based on where he is right now," the manager said.
"As long as he continues going in that direction."
Keeping it real: After winning the first three games of the series against
the Red Sox, the Yankees entered Sunday's game with a 4 1/2-game lead in the
AL East. Despite the extended lead, New York -- which stands 25 games over
.500 -- isn't about to put it into cruise control.
"You can't allow the lead to make you overconfident or relaxed; neither one
of those things should happen," Torre said. "If you fight your way to 30
games over .500 -- and we don't know how long that will take -- then you can
measure that against how many games you have left. We're not there yet."
Manny being Manny: Manny Ramirez is 6-for-9 in the first three games of the
series with two home runs, giving him 48 homers in his career against New
York.
That places Ramirez fifth on the all-time list for Yankees opponents,
trailing only Jimmie Foxx (70), Ted Williams (62), Hank Greenberg (53) and
Carl Yastrzemski (52).
Ramirez is hitting .535 and has driven in 20 runs against the Yanks in 13
games this season, the most by an opponent since Jackie Jensen had 25 RBIs
against New York in 1959.
"He's a pretty good player; one of the best handful of players in the game,
hitting-wise," Torre said. "Sometimes his defense gets in the way, but his
offensive ability, there aren't too many guys you can say are better than
him. He's really scary at the plate."
Coming up: The Yankees and Red Sox close out their five-game series on Monday
as Lidle takes on Wells. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET.
