RON: I CAN FIX WHAT'S WANG WITH CHIEN-MING

Ron Guidry wants to return as Yankees pitching coach next season, if for no
other reason than the quantity of quality of young arms in the organization.
It's a collection that includes Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain.
But there's another name Guidry adds to that group: Chien-Ming Wang.
Though Wang seems like an established veteran, the 27-year-old right-hander
remains Guidry's pet project - especially in the aftermath of the AL Division
Series.
"It's not like you're talking about an Andy Pettitte or a Roger Clemens,"
Guidry said yesterday at the Stadium. "You are talking about a kid who has
only 2 1/2 years in the big leagues who is still learning. It's still
relatively new to him."
Wang was the Yankees' biggest disappointment of the ALDS, losing both games
he started, to the tune of a 19.06 ERA. This after a regular season in which
he won 19 games for the second straight year and reaffirmed his status as the
ace of the Yankees' rotation.
"A lot of pressure was put on him, and I'm not disappointed in the job he did
as much as tipping my cap to the Cleveland hitters - they made a lot of
adjustments," Guidry said. "They stayed off the pitches that he throws that
guys normally swing at. They made him get the ball up."
Wang, meanwhile, said his biggest objective for the offseason is to develop
alternatives to his sinker.
"I have to work on the slider and the changeup," Wang said. "Those pitches
have to get better."
Guidry added, "The club puts a lot of pressure on [Wang] because of who he is
and what he's done the last couple of years, but it's still relatively new to
him.
"His biggest challenge now is to adjust to teams when they make adjustments.
That's something he hasn't learned yet."
