Wang Still Not Close To Majors

ATLANTA --
When the Washington Nationals signed Chien-Ming Wang at the start of spring
training, club officials hoped the right-hander would be ready to return
from a major shoulder injury sometime in May. Once the regular season began
and Wang was placed on the 60-day disabled list, the timetable for his
return shifted to June. Somewhere along the way, that became July.
But as the calendar shifts to a new month, Wang still is nowhere close to
pitching in the major leagues. He continues to throw live batting practice
at the Nationals’ spring complex in Viera, Fla., but still must progress
to throw in simulated games, then in the minor leagues before he’ll return
to the big leagues.
Though the timetable keeps getting pushed back, the Nationals insist Wang
hasn’t experienced any setbacks along the way. The problem, according to
general manager Mike Rizzo, is that there is no precedent for a baseball
player returning from the complicated surgery (repairing a torn ligament
in his shoulder capsule) he underwent last summer.
“It was just a surgery that’s very uncommon to baseball players,” Rizzo
said. “It’s more of a football-type of injury. Drew Brees, he’s kind of
the poster child for it. So it’s a little difficult to pinpoint a true
rehab schedule for a baseball player. He doesn’t have any pain. It’s just
such a unique surgery he had that any kind of rehab calendar was hard to
get.”
The Nationals admittedly took a risk signing Wang in February to a contract
that included $2 million in base salary and as much as $3 million more in
incentives. Team officials, though, felt it was worth the risk to see if the
30-year-old right-hander could rediscover the form that helped him post
back-to-back 19-win seasons for the New York Yankees in 2006-07.
Additionally, because Wang is under the Nationals’ control for 2011, the
move could be seen as a long-term investment in a pitcher that might
help this franchise develop into a contender.
But as the 2010 season reaches its midpoint and Wang remains stuck in the
early stages of rehab in Florida, time is running out for the Nationals to
determine the pitcher’s long-term viability.
“We’d like to see him perform in the major leagues this year, to see what
kind of outlook we could have for the future,” Rizzo said. Asked if he
remains confident the right-hander will pitch in the majors in 2010, the GM
replied: “Yeah. We think he’s going to pitch for us in the big leagues this
year, yeah.”
Before that can happen, Wang must progress past his current stage of rehab.
He’s scheduled to throw 45 pitches of live batting practice on Friday, the
second time he has faced live hitters. Once he’s cleared that hurdle, he’ll
start pitching in simulated games. Once he accomplishes that with no
difficulties, he can go on a minor-league rehab assignment, which usually
lasts one month for pitchers.
Rizzo admitted there’s no sure way to determine a timetable at this point.
“It changes day-by-day,” he said. “It’s all about how you feel the next
day. Do you progress forward, or do you stay the same, or do you regress? So
far, he’s stayed the same and inched forward. We’re hopeful he stays on
that pace, where he can stay on pace and keep inching forward and get him out
on the mound in a meaningful rehab assignment.”
