The Celtics will open the gates to the 2009-10 season with a whole different
look -- one that will have them bursting out, guns blazing, with a big chip on
their shoulder.
After being hampered down last year with multiple injuries, the Celtics failed
to reach the Finals, never mind repeat as champions, a feat a good handful of
people expected them to do.
The C's enter the year with a robust club stock-full of talent, youth, veteran
leadership, and court smarts.
They're coming in with the bar set high and looking to cruise in the regular
season. I don't think I've seen anyone put them below the third seed in the
East, a decent amount pegging them the "Beast of the East," and surmising that
they'll be the first seed.
A few acquisitions and a lot of stomach butterflies later, here we are. Early
in September we transition into "training camp-mode," with a small hope way
down in the pits of our optimistic mindset of nabbing one more free agent
before the season opens.

Let's run over the team's key strengths and weaknesses.
◎
Strengths
優勢
Frontcourt: The Celtics have an exceptionally solid front court. The gang is
headed by the returning Kevin Garnett and the defensive monster Kendrick
Perkins, whose famous staredown is capable of making the opposing team's backup
center refuse his coach's offer to tear off the warmup clothes and step in for
his teammate.
Growling in back of them are Glen Davis and Rasheed Wallace, two guys who had a
large share of starts last year.
And finally, the insurance man Danny Ainge brought in was Sheldon Williams, who
may play a few minutes a game if the other four big men are in need of a rest.
Our frontcourt is as athletic and agile as any in the league. Perhaps the most
vital tool we have is intelligence and the ability to make split-second
decisions, something the front court is most possessive of.
The Shamrock ballers have a variety of moves and are conversant with many
different game styles. Most guys in the front court, with the exception of
Perk, who is still able of netting a short-range J, can step out and knock one
down, Rasheed Wallace even making the giant leap to three-point land.
All guys are consistent both in the paint and on the perimeter and should be a
major factor on the road to Titletown.
Fastbreak game: This team is as quick if there ever was one, starting with
Rajon Rondo. Rondo has been recognized as one of the league's speediest
players, changing directions in a snap, and slipping past defenders as if he
was pushing aside motionless obstacles.
With Rondo leading the charge and trains like Glen Davis and Kevin Garnett
going at full speed behind him, it's sure-fire basket every time unless the
bullish crew is outnumbered.
And as if there could be no better group for it, add in air strikers from the
perimeter such as Paul Pierce, Eddie House, and Ray Allen, who will be ready to
hit a three-pointer upon a kickout or rush into the lane for an open layup.
A team full of surprises: Danny Ainge is one of the few GMs in the league who
establishes a core squad of veteran firepower and then banks on surprises. This
year, he robbed the league of one of the sleepers in Lester Hudson, an
exceptionally talented player on offense and a tough kid to get around on
defense.
Aside from Hudson, who will be anxiously anticipating all of his minutes, we
have Bill Walker to work with, a freakish speciman with explosive legs and a
gritty defense game. He will be stepping in for Paul Pierce when the second or
third unit comes in, sharing playing time with the newly acquired Marquis
Daniels.
Both have the aptitude to get to the rim on undiluted strength. Hudson is
supposed to be an excellent ball-handler, and should be able to give us a few
buckets coming off of the bench. Walker will receive more court time, and will
give us an injection of defensive energy behind Pierce and beside Daniels.
Sheldon Williams

Weaknesses
Backup PG: Eddie House, who plays as if placed at the shooting guard position,
is our second string PG. While I love House's bloodthirsty/gutsy attitude and
hustle, he is not the ideal PG we want to back up Rajon Rondo, who is very
vulnerable to injury because of his willingness to bang and bruise with the
bigs down low.
The offseason isn't over yet, and there has been quiet pushes to add another
playmaker to the squad. But with Ainge spending money that was focused on the
front court then snagging a reinforcer for when Pierce takes a breather
(Marquis Daniels), it's inevitable that we'll have to get a free agent loner
for cheap cash.
Though, acknowledging that this is already our Achilles heal makes the idea
sound better.
with the Big Three, Rajon Rondo, Doc Rivers, the Celtics have themselves a
collage or colorful minds and different opinions on team issues.
Now, I'm not saying the situation in the locker room isn't controllable -- we
all know how forceful the Big Three can be when they need to -- but I just
can't help but worry that the team's reputation as an open and disciplined
clubhouse could get out of hand.
Hopefully Garnett will secure himself once again as the team's "Queen Bee" once
again and domiciliate Rasheed Wallace before he can get a bit too loose.
Finishing Chances
Regular season: 67-15 -- The Celtics made the right moves this Summer and start
the car that is the 2009-10 season looking like one of the most formidable
teams in the league. Rajon Rondo will likely scrap and scratch his way into the
All-Star game, being the facilitator for one of the toughest groups ego-wise.
They also have a lot of players that can shock the NBA if they pan out right, a
key that most other teams haven't gotten their hands on rolling into the
'09-'10 season.
Playoff/Title chances: Look for the C's to be either the first or second seed
going into the playoffs. Personally, I don't think any team in the Association
can beat them when they're on top of their game, and I believe the team this
year will have a strong finish to cap off the season.
As for the championship, I can't make a prediction being 100% positive about it
due to the number of great teams this year, but I'll say Boston has at least a
20% to get another ring in 2009-10.
Go Celtics!
Marquis Daniels,
