YOUTH CUP REPORT: MANCHESTER UNITED 4 CHELSEA 0 (AGG 6-3)
Posted on: Wed 20 Apr 2011
A disappointing night at Old Trafford for Chelsea's youngsters saw the
Youth Cup holders exit the competition at the semi-final stage, after
being comprehensively beaten.
In a game when Chelsea failed to regularly threaten the home side, a
William Keane hat-trick and a deflected Ravel Morrison strike were enough
for Man United to book their place in the final.
Chelsea came into the second leg at Old Trafford with a narrow 3-2
advantage thanks to a Nathaniel Chalobah double and a Bobby Devyne strike,
although they knew that there was still a lot of work to be done in the
tie.
The Blues made one change from the first leg, with captain Daniel Pappoe
(pictured below) returning to the heart of the defence after missing the
first leg through suspension. United also made one alteration to their
side which was beaten 10 days ago, with danger man Ravel Morrison
returning from suspension to replace Jesse Lingard.

In front of a crowd of over 9,000 at Old Trafford, both sides started
tentatively, with neither keeper being forced in to making a save during
the opening exchanges.
It took 23 minutes for Chelsea to create the first chance of note, as Aziz
Deen-Conteh played in Milan Lalkovic after a bursting 40-yard run, but the
shot was blocked by the legs of keeper Johnstone.
The visitors regularly gave the ball away and on 33 minutes that nearly
cost us, but Chalobah put in a vital challenge when Van Velzen was lining
up to shoot. United were starting to look more of an attacking threat,
with Morrison's swerving effort from the edge of the area forcing a low
save from Blackman.
The home side took the lead on 38 minutes, when Pogba's lay off found
Morrison just inside the area. His strike took a massive deflection off
the sliding George Saville and looped over Blackman in to the top corner.
It was a very unfortunate way to concede and the goal boosted United, who
went on to double their advantage four minutes later when William Keane
out jumped Pappoe at the far post to head home Sean McGinty's cross from
close range.
Chelsea almost reduced the deficit immediately, as Deen-Conteh's cross
from the left had to be tipped over the crossbar by Johnstone.
Coach Dermot Drummy was forced into making one change at the interval,
with Adam Nditi being introduced to replace the hobbling Rohan Ince.
Chelsea started the second half positively, with Lalkovic (pictured below)
forcing a low save from Johnstone on 50 minutes, after the striker found
space on the edge of the area.

Lalkovic
Lalkovic was looking bright for the visitors, with the striker cutting
inside two defenders before seeing his shot from an angle saved. The
Slovakian then had a shot from distance saved with ease on 68 minutes.
United added a third on 75 minutes, as Chelsea giving away possession left
United substitute Tyler Blackett with room on the left. His cross was
bundled home at the second attempt by Keane from inside the six-yard area.
Chelsea went in search of a goal and nearly reduced the defecit on 79
minutes, but Lalkovic's shot was blocked on the line, after Johnstone
failed to claim the original cross.
Further misery was added Chelsea on 86 minutes when United were awarded a
penalty after Keane was brought down in the area by Blackman. The striker
picked himself up to take the spot kick, which he buried low in to the
corner to complete his hat-trick, and book his side a place in the Youth
Cup final against Sheffield United.
'We got beaten by a better side on the night,' said Drummy. 'Perhaps if
Milan Lalkovic had taken his chance first half and we had got one of
theirs off the line then you never know but they deserved it.
'The boys are learning the game and it was a massive occasion. Sometimes
you freeze and your energy goes because of the anxiety and that might have
happened to a few but I wouldn't fault them for effort from the beginning
of the completion to now.
'We have done ourselves proud up to now. The boys are really upset but we
have to pick them up and it is learning curve. You have to come back and
fight another day.'
