D-backs, Jays talking possible deal
PHOENIX -- The D-backs and Blue Jays are "making progress" on a deal that would
send catcher Chris Snyder to Toronto and first baseman Lyle Overbay to Arizona,
according to a Major League source.

Snyder, 28, was hampered for most of the 2009 season with back problems that
eventually required surgery and limited him to just 61 games. He hit .200 with
six homers and 22 RBIs.

Last season, the 32-year-old hit .265 with 16 homers and 64 RBIs in 132 games.
Getting on base has always been a strength for Overbay, who had an on-base
percentage of .372 in 2009.

help at first base and the Jays looking to replace free agent Rod Barajas behind
the plate.

Snyder, who signed a three-year $14.25 million extension last winter, is
expendable for the D-backs because of the emergence of Miguel Montero behind theplate. Montero took over the starting job when Snyder got hurt in June and woundup hitting .294 with 16 homers and 59 RBIs in 470 plate appearances.

Overbay is in the final year of a four-year, $24 million contract he signed
prior to the 2007 season. The left-handed hitter is set to make $7 million next
year. Overbay was looked at as a core player with the Jays when he signed that
deal, but with Toronto retooling, it would seem to make sense for the club to
fill its catching need by dealing him.

If the D-backs were to acquire Overbay, it would allow them to be patient with
first-base prospect Brandon Allen, whom they acquired last summer from the

D-backs and he has struggled at the plate thus far in the Arizona Fall League.
