John Lackey: “I don’t know what the hell happened”

BOSTON -- John Lackey didn't know where it all went wrong.
"I can't explain it, man," he said. "That's the best I've felt in the bullpen
warming up all year. I don't know what the hell happened."
What happened was that Lackey gave up eight earned runs on 11 hits in 4 1/3
innings pitched, his most since he gave up nine earned runs at Toronto back
in May. But unlike in that game, where Terry Francona appeared to leave him
in too long in the seventh inning, Lackey couldn't even survive the fifth.
"It just got to a point where it was hard to leave him in," Francona said.
"We needed to stop the runs now. ... I wanted to because I didn't want to get
into our bullpen that early."
Lackey gave up three runs in the first inning to put the Red Sox in a quick
hole, and he gave up two more in the third, one on the fourth and two in the
fifth.
But he wasn't thinking much about the runs that crossed the plate.
"The first inning, I was definitely missing some locations, probably
overthrowing it a little bit because I felt pretty good," he said. "After
that, I mean, you're going to have to go back and look at some of those
pitches and look at what happened. Don't just look at the line score."
In the third inning, after Conor Jackson made a diving catch down the
left-field line, what would have been an inning-ending strikeout eluded Jason
Varitek to allow Vladimir Guerrero to reach. Chris Davis then singled, Robert
Andino walked and Nolan Reimold fisted a two-run single into right field.
"I had the inning where I had two guys out, runner got on with a strikeout,
ended up giving up two runs. Then I had bases-loaded ball that falls in on me
for another two runs. I don't know, man."
