Clayton Kershaw won't start Sunday due to back injury
Dodgers ace and reigning Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw was scheduled to
make his second start of the season -- when most teams hadn't even played a
single game -- Sunday night against the Padres.
Instead, he'll miss that start due to an inflamed muscle in his back, the
Dodgers have told reporters (Bill Shaikin). After feeling some tightness in
his back Tuesday, Kershaw underwent an MRI that revealed the inflammation.
Kershaw, 26, won the MLB opener over the Diamondbacks in Australia, working 6
2/3 innings and allowing five hits, one walk and one run while striking out
seven. He was 16-9 with a 1.83 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 232 strikeouts in 236
innings last season.
In a career that includes 183 starts and almost 1,200 innings, Kershaw has
never been on the disabled list.
Zack Greinke, Hyun-jin Ryu and Dan Haren could be options to take Kershaw's
spot Sunday night.
