[外電] The Mystery 'Shooter'? It’s Tim Thomas. And We’ve Got
On Monday, Mavs GM Donnie Nelson engaged DB.com in a game of “Name That
Shooter.’’ And now we can reveal answer: It’s Tim Thomas.
Want more parlor-game answers? DallasBasketball.com has the scoop on: the
Mavs’ plans for the BAE, a decision on Ryan Hollins and on James Singleton,
the latest on Drew Gooden’s still-unclear contract, and Tim Thomas as it
relates to his position in the rotation.
*First to the BAE: Nelson tells us that the club is leaning toward
keeping it in pocket in anticipation of next year. “Something could always
pop,’’ Donnie says. “But we feel our roster right now is pretty much ready
to go.’’
*To Ryan Hollins: We are told that the Mavs anticipate him eventually
getting an offer in excess of $1 million and that Dallas is prepared to let
him go.
*To James Singleton: He’s done everything the club has asked of him,
but the Gooden acquisition will bump him down the totem pole. Dallas hopes to
have him return, but may wait until the end of summer to finalize anything.
*To Drew Gooden: Mavs owner Mark Cuban apparently jetted to LA on
Sunday to dine with Goode and Shawn Marion and the agent they share, Don
Fegan. This after both Gooden and Cuban announced his joining the Mavs on his
Twitter account. That’s still the plan; Gooden’s latest Tweets are about
what jersey number he should wear in Dallas, a game exactly like the one
Marion played before him.
Yet we’re getting conflicting reports on the dollar terms of the
one-year deal. And oddly, as of 6 p.m. Monday, no paperwork had yet to cross
the NBA’s desk.
We’re sure it’s nothing … but after all, this is Drew Gooden weren’t
talking about.
*To Tim Thomas: We wrote on Monday afternoon that the Mavs were working
to finalize the acquisition of a “shooter,’’ and with the help of Donnie,
had ourselves some clues. The guy would be a “shooter’’ but not a “
shooting guard,’’ was to be a more “versatile player’’ than present “
shooter’’ roster member Matt Carroll, and was to be acquired via free
agency rather than via trade.
All y’all on DB.com Boards had some fun with it … except for the
undeniably not-fun part about how Thomas seems a strange fit in Dirk Nowitzki
’s locker room. After all, the last time we checked – NBA Playoffs, Mavs
vs. Phoenix, Thomas calling Dirk nasty names and Dirk responding with 50 –
these two didn’t seem like chums.
But this is the second time this summer the Mavs have made a pass at
Thomas; he was with the Bulls when the Shawn Marion four-team trade nearly
included Chicago and Thomas. Since then, the Bulls have bought him out,
making him a free agent. And he is reportedly scheduled to be in Dallas on
Tuesday to finally get a deal done.
Thomas was to make $6.5 million this season before the buyout, and is now
expected to fit well under the umbrella of whatever MLE is left after the
Gooden signing. So he’s not expensive. He certainly qualifies as a “shooter.
’’ Dallas almost certainly ran this concept by Dirk before pursuing it. And
– most importantly – Thomas is not viewed as a primary rotation player.
He’s an extra body and a shooting specialist, until and unless he proves
otherwise.
So there’s the end to that mystery. … and some answers to some other
issues before they become at all mysterious.
有一段提到 小牛可能會放掉 Ryan Hollins
