The modal 19th-century example to illustrate this is the Philippines and Spain.
Youngsters from the Philippines in Spain found that in Spain no one cared whet
her they were Chinese descended, creoles, mestizos, etc. They were all "Filipin
os," whereas in the colony these groups were sharply delineated, antagonistic,
and socially extremely visible. In the colony "Filipino" meant only creole. Tod
ay in the US no one really cares you come from China or Japan, Indonesia or Mal
aysia -- you are all "Asians." But almost no one in Johore or Nagasaki thinks o
f themselves as "Asian."
