MATCH PREVIEW
- Spurs have won only five of their 63 league matches against Chelsea,
Manchester United and Arsenal since the turn of the Millennium.
- Two of those victories have come in the last 10 days, and a hat-trick at the
expense of Manchester United would be quite some feat - especially when you
consider it is a barely believable 66 matches since Spurs won away at one of
the Big Four.
- They last triumphed at Old Trafford 21 years ago, but this match looks a
close one to call. Spurs are made of sterner stuff than last season when they
let slip a 2-0 half-time lead in this fixture and eventually lost 5-2.
- Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping the 93rd-minute winner by Paul Scholes
against Manchester City last week, which kept alive their hopes of a fourth
successive title, will give his side the momentum to see off Spurs and
leapfrog Chelsea at the top of the table.
- Win or lose, Tottenham will be looking for a favour on Saturday from the
unlikeliest of sources. They will be hoping bitter rivals Arsenal can beat
Manchester City as the race for the fourth Champions League spot nears its
climax.
MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
‧ Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 17 league matches against
Tottenham since a 3-1 defeat at White Hart Lane in May 2001.
‧ They have only beaten Manchester United three times in 35 matches in the
Premier League; 4-1 in 1996, 3-1 in 1999 and 3-1 in 2001.
‧ United have won 80 of 171 previous meetings, with Tottenham winning 46
games and 45 drawn.
Man Utd
‧ It is six years since the club last won their final four matches of the
season. In 2002-03 they beat Blackburn, Tottenham, Charlton and Everton
on their way to the title.
‧ United have won, and kept a clean sheet, in six of their last eight league
matches.
‧ They have the best defensive record in the division, conceding 27 goals in
35 matches.
‧ Wayne Rooney has scored 148 club goals, while Paul Scholes needs one more
to register 150 for Manchester United.
‧ Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick are poised for their respective 200th
and 100th starts for United.
Tottenham
‧ Spurs have not won in their last 66 Premier League visits to the Big Four
clubs (D20, L46) since beating Liverpool at Anfield in August 1993.
‧ However, Tottenham have already beaten Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea this
season. If they win at Old Trafford they will be the first club to defeat
each of the Big Four in a single season since Leeds United did so in 1995.
‧ They have won seven of their last eight league matches.
‧ Eidur Gudjohnsen is set to make his 250th English league appearance.
