Apr 6, 2010 Men just wanna have fun LAST Thursday, Mayday vocalist Ashin dropped a bombshell on his blog by announcing that the Taiwanese band would skip their upcoming gigs to star in the sequel to the gangland drama Monga. Panic-stricken fans rang up concert promoters and asked for refunds - before they realised it was an April Fool's gag. The joke was on non-believers, really: anybody silly enough to entertain the possibility that the most hardworking and earnest rock stars in Chinese music would run away to be movie stars on the eve of a world tour. The tour is their second one since their last album in 2008, Poetry Of The Day After, and has been billed as a bigger, 'unlimited edition' of their last tour just last year. When they say bigger, they mean bigger, too. They are playing at more stops in countries such as the United States and Australia. In Singapore and Beijing, they are playing at larger venues such as the National Stadium and Workers Stadium respectively. For their gig in Singapore on April 17 - the first Asian stop after the American leg - Mayday had to switch locations from the Padang to the National Stadium so as to accommodate all their props. A 3-ton Transformer robot will be shipped in for the show, and a team will be flown in from Hong Kong to assemble it. Also to join Mayday on stage are a 20-member string ensemble and a 20-member singing group from Singapore. Mayday will be the first band to play at the stadium, which has hosted singers such as David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, A*mei and Mariah Carey in its history. Tiers of seats will be set on the field, Singapore F1-style, and only some of the football stands will be open. More than 90 per cent of the tickets - more than 10,000 and counting, depending on how many more seats in the football stands will be sold - have been snapped up.
