The match with the highest number of votes will be deemed the Greatest Women’s Match of the Open Era during the WTA Tour Championships prese nted by Porsche at Staples Center, Los Angeles. The following is some critical praise for the Henin-Hardenne/ Capriati match: “Justine Henin-Hardenne reinforced her reputation as one of the toughest competitors in sport by fighting off cramp and a 5-2 deficit in the third set to reach the USOpen final with an extraordinary 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 victory over Jennifer Capriati… The semifinal will go down as one of the greatest women’s matches ever played. It was a titanic three-hour struggle that contained everything you could wish for in a sporting contest.ꄊ– Sunday Times (Richard Evans) “… a semi that became an instant entrant in United StatesOpen folklore… It was unforgettable theatre, ending with Henin-Hardenne in a trainer’s room receiving an IV and the 27-year old Capriati opening a psychological vein during some moving introspection around 1am.ꄊ - New York Times (Selena Roberts) “The greatest match I've seen in a long time. It's funny, we were just here discussing the 15 greatest matches of the last 30 years. I was like, "Make that 16." - Martina Navratilova “The two players pushed themselves to the limits as conditions grew chillier and windier, producing a highlight reel of shot-making – clean winners, passing shots on the run and lobs kept in by the elements.ꄊ– L.A.Times (Lisa Dillman) “Whatever the Williams sisters may give women’s tennis, they have never given it a match like Friday night’s USOpen semifinal between Justine Henin-Hardenne and Jennifer Capriati. There was no question of any punches being pulled in this one. In fact, by the end of it, after three hours and three minutes of the most punishing tennis, it was hard to distinguish the winner from the loser – rather like one of those Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier fights.” – Sunday Telegraph (Clive White) “The match spanned three hours and three minutes and an even greater expanse of emotions. It was a classic clash that had it all – spectacular shotmaking, remarkable retrievals and compelling comebacks. In the end, it was an extraordinary effort from both players, who poured their heart and guts onto the court, competing as if their careers depended upon the outcome .” – Tennis Week (Alberto Amalfi) “FlushingMeadows was reverberating from one of the best women’s matches in recent years… three hours and three minutes of absorbing tennis that had more twists than a mystery being solved by that other famous Belgian, Hercule Poirot.” – The Observer (Chris Bowers) “Despite Capriati’s efforts, there will be an all-Belgian women’s final tonight at the U.S. Open because a cramping Justine Henin-Hardenne survived at three-set, three-hour semifinal war against Capriati in the most dramatic women’s match at the Open in recent memory.”– New York Post (Marc Berman) -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 218.167.198.237
