Defense firm
Pilloried by some sections of the Turkish sporting media for poor
defending, despite coming from behind to beat Diyarbakirspor 2-1 in their
Turkish Super League opener last Saturday, Galatasaray defended very and
gave the erratic Bulgarian strikers no space.
Even with its comfortable lead, Galatasaray maintained pressure
throughout the second half and rarely allowed Sofia near its penalty area.
In one or two occasions after the break, Galatasaray took its foot off the
gas and CSKA made some moves. But all the Bulgarians' efforts were thwarted
by the superb defending orchestrated by veteran captain Bulent Korkmaz --

Mention should also be made of man-of-the-match Joao Batista who still
mustered the courage to play after learning of the sudden death of his
mother just before kickoff. The Brazilian had a field day, reducing CSKA
players to novices of the game in midfieild. Batista was expected to fly
home after the match to attend his dear mom's funeral.
The match against CSKA was Galatasaray's second official game in its
new Ataturk Olympic Stadium. During its first match against Diyarbakir,
there were two power outages halting play for nearly 20 minutes. No similar
problems were reported in Wednesday's game.
The other Turkish team in the Champions League, last season's League
champion Besiktas, qualified automatically for the group phase of the
tournament.
